Good idea/bad idea?
I emailed for a few quotes on Caricaturists, as there will be about a 2 hour photo slot that I don't particularly want my guests being bored during. From the responses I've had, it seems like £300 for a 2 hour slot is standard . Simply out of budget, so I am ready to give up on the idea. Then I have a brainwave. I check out my local college courses, to discover they have an art and design course based on animated drawing. Now, I'm considering emailing the head of department, to ask if any of their students can draw good caricatures, and perhaps make a (much cheaper) deal with them. Do you think this is a good or a bad idea? Would you trust a college student to turn up on the day? Do you think they could reliably draw 30 odd caricatures? Just an idea, if not, I am just going to have to let my guests be bored for a few hours

Hiya,
Its worth a try and if you pay cash on the day then at least if they do fail to show youre not out of pocket, on the other hand my guests had no entertainment apart from quartet playing in the background) for a couple of hours and no one was bored, they were happily chatting so I wouldn't worry too much if you don't find anyone and a Caricaturist can only entertain one person at a time..perhaps a magician or a dancer would be better???

I thought about a magician, but when I think of magician I think "kids"! I thought with a caricaturist, people would watch them drawing, while someone else was being drawn, and then people would be showing other people the finished caricature, therefore entertainment for everyone? I just like caricaturists, and it would give guests a little momento to take home. Do you think a college student would be happy to be paid on the actual day? I guess because there would be no contract, a deposit wouldn't be expected?

I think you could probably tell how reliable they are when you meet them and if they are using the work to go towards a course rather just needing the money Im sure you'd be fine....how about trying adult education classes as well, as mature students might be more reliable?

I think thats a really good idea!
As long as the students understand what you expect of them, and the know when to turn up etc. Pay them cash on the day, that way there is no money lost if they dont turn up. Speak to them about who provides the paper/card for the pictures, if they are a poor student they might not have money to buy decent paper. And offer to give them a recommendation for their portfolio if they have one

Wanted to add I got a magician for my daughters party last year and he was hilarious!, the kids thought he was fab but the adults loved him, he had us all in stitches!
